Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. John 8:12
I spent a whole year "chasing the light". It was the first time the Lord gave me a phrase rather than one word to guide my year. There is a whole series of artwork to go along with this journey.
Most of my life I have been afraid of the dark. As a small child I can remember being so scared to sleep in my own room. I was convinced a shaggy "fur" coat hanging on the back of a desk chair was a monstrous bear coming to eat me. I was six. There were all kinds of dark things under the bed and in the closet to cause fear.
As an adult when my husband was away overnight for work I would sleep with the TV on to drown out the night noises and distract my mind from the fear of what was lurking in the dark. Now let me tell you, I was saved at nine and started following the Lord at 15, yet it still did not deliver me from all my fears.
For a long time I could not understand. If Jesus is the light and those who follow Him will not walk in darkness, why does the dark hold so much fear for me? Many years later the Holy Spirit revealed that I did not trust Jesus to be MY LIGHT in the darkness. I was relying on other means to comfort me in the dark.
What is the darkness that overwhelms you with fear? What are you relying on to comfort you instead of the Lord Jesus?
The Holy Spirit led me to Scriptures about fear and anxiety over many years. There Jesus met me, that scared six year old little girl, and He walked me out of the darkness and into His glorious light. Then He gave me 31 pieces of artwork to drive the truth into the deepest part of the darkness within me. (I have published a book with the artwork and Scriptures.)
For years now I have been free from my fear of the dark, from most all of the fears that plagued me and caused my heart to race with anxiety. If Jesus delivered me, He can and will deliver you!
Lesson 18: Jesus is the fierce light in the deepest darkness.
