You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. My journal page from this day looks like messed up directions, lines and arrows going every which way as I break down the meanings of the words from these verses. Let's see if I can make it more understandable here.
Normally I write the Greek words with their definitions. However, this day I only wrote the most basic meanings for the words in bold above.
World = cosmos
City = corporate dwelling
Hill = mountain, place of encountering God
Hidden = concealed, secret
Light = set on fire
Stand = magnify the lamps radiance, lift the flame & disperse the light throughout the room
Light = a portable lamp or illuminator, oil-fed portable lamp
House = dwelling, sphere of authority, community, worship & inheritance
Light = manifest, rays, fire, divine illumination
Shine = radiate brillancy
Good = commendable
Deeds = an action that completes an inner desire/purpose
I find these definitions so amazing. I also find it amazing that I did not look up the word lamp on the day I was chasing down these meanings. It is the same word and meaning of Light, but today I notice also it could be a candle set on a stand, especially after dark to illuminate the room. It was inexpensive, portable, and effective, yet its light was limited and quickly quenched if hidden or neglected.
Jesus, the original vessel of light, calls His chosen one's vessels of light. Chosen vessels to carry the light to the world, He has given a command about this in Matthew 28:19. Chosen vessels collectively responsible for the city, the territory, where we dwell. Chosen vessels with personal authority over my own home.
